Dear Portsmouth
Voter:
We want to thank you for the privilege of representing you for the past
two years. During this time we have encountered many challenges, and
addressed several needs of our community, guided by the principles of
open government and accountability to all residents of Portsmouth.
Our Vision for Portsmouth:
"To promote the positive growth and well-being of our
community through open, reasoned and courteous communication with our
citizens, to improve the quality of life in Portsmouth."
We can look back
on a number of accomplishments which have improved our quality of life
in Portsmouth:
- Preserved
over 550 acres of open space – ensuring the ongoing character and
beauty of our town in perpetuity.
- All
Portsmouth schools are rated as “High Performing” at one of the
lowest costs per pupil in the state.
- Adopted the
highly acclaimed “West Side Master Plan,” and created the Portsmouth
Redevelopment Agency to help implement the plan’s strategic visions
for development of that important area.
- Enacted new
zoning ordinances to help us grow smartly, leveraging our marine
industry and burgeoning resort/residential opportunities to promote
healthy economic expansion.
- Chartered a
long term strategic planning process through our Economic
Development Committee to stimulate business growth in town, and ease
the tax burden on our homeowners.
- Built a new
High School Gymnasium that will meet the needs of our students for
the next 50 years! Construction was completed on time and within
budget… and the gym looks great!
- Enacted a
tax deferment ordinance for older homeowners to ensure Portsmouth
remains affordable for everyone.
- Adopted
rules guaranteeing citizens the right to place issues on the town
council’s meeting agenda.
- Worked
closely with RIDOT to complete the renovation of Island Park’s
seawall and Park Avenue.
- Partnered
with the Library to acquire land and address their expanding needs.
- Adopted an
affordable housing plan and amendment to the zoning ordinance.
We have worked
cooperatively with business, DEM, RIDOT, CRMC, Aquidneck Land Trust,
Aquidneck Island Planning Commission, our own volunteer committees and
others to ensure a bright future for the Town of Portsmouth. We have
worked hard to live up to the faith you placed in us two years ago. The
2006 Democratic slate is an exciting combination of experienced public
officials and energetic newcomers who are eager to work together to
provide Portsmouth residents with the responsible and effective
government you deserve. We ask that you give us the opportunity to build
upon these positive accomplishments to continue improving the lives of
our residents and character of our community.
Our pledge remains to provide government which addresses the needs of
ALL our residents.
